Congratulations to last week's winner of the RollerGirlSkates.com Weekly FREE SH*T CONTEST,
Moloko Violet of Greensboro Roller Derby- Gate City Roller Girls  has won a FREE pair of KP-Pro knee pads, courtesy of Triple 8!

THE CONTEST: "As a vet, what's the one best piece of advice would you give to a Fresh Meat skater?"

THE WINNING ENTRY: Although most of the entries stressed the importance of good knee pads from the moment you start derby (which is AMAZING advice),
we found that Moloko Violet's submission really spoke to us;

"Everyone wants to emphasize the heart of derby: the community, the love, the friendship, and the way this all becomes part of an addiction-- and addiction with a penchant to be dolled up in stretchy-bright-things. It's true, and I miss these things as I sit thousands of miles away from my league, going mad with the desire to be back on 8 wheels and in weird outfits with them... but you'll figure all of that out in no time. It's obvious. As a veteran, I have more important advice:

Treat it like a sport, compete every day, and focus on getting strong.

You like the silly socks? The crazy events? The loud music? Can't wait to paint-up your face and see posters with your clever name all over them? Yeah, me too! But we can only keep this thing going with a hefty dose of true athleticism and real talent. Let's be real: if we are going to keep the crazy clothes and rebel attitude, we are going to have to work harder to show that we play a real sport. And I'm okay with that, because I get to work harder and still wear Blade Runner's Priss' make-up while I play my sport.

 They may come to watch bunch of loud fools clumsily galloping around, in minimal clothing, occasionally running into each other. But they won't respect it and they won't come back again and buy your merch. What I and the fans that respect roller derby want to see is a bunch of loud SUPER HEROES (often in minimal clothing) on that track! Get stable, be strong, go faster, and encourage your teammates to do the same. Derby is there for women that have never played sports before in their lives and for women of all sizes, but it is only a matter of time before we're all on the same page: a rolling army of muscle-y awesome. And it's that tougher, healthier you that really pays off. Ask yourself at practice: Would I pick myself to be in the front wall of the final jam?

So that's my line. Don't worry about the tights, the theatrics or the after-party when you're at practice. That totally great stuff just comes naturally.
Sweat first. That's why you came here, anyway, right?"

Thanks, Moloko.  We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
